EXPERIENCES

Our guide will pick you up from your accommodation in the early morning at about 5:30 am and give you the fantastic opportunity to participate in the daily morning rituals of saffron-clad monks collecting offerings of Alms (ubiquitous sticky rice) from the faithful residents. This tradition is very unique in Laos, being the only Buddhist nation still preserving the procession.

Afterward we visit Luang Prabang morning market. The market lining a couple of quiet streets near the Royal Palace, starts early and is over by mid-morning. It sets up along a couple of side-streets next to one of the city’s many Wats. A butcher and some of the more touristy stalls have actual tables for their wares. But most of the vendors, selling anything from rice to fresh vegetables to steamed fish to frogs, and anything else that might be the day’s catch, just set up on the ground.

We take a car back to the hotel for breakfast at around 7 am

The Royal Palace, which is today the national museum and built by French colonialists between 1904-09 as a residence of king family. The building itself is a blend of French beaux arts and Lao architecture. Inside displays a lovely collection of the artifacts reflecting the richness of Lao culture. (Entrance fee 30,000 kip)

We take a car to the Riverview park located in the tip of Luang Prabang peninsula. The juncture where the two rivers meet is believed by locals to be home to two notable nagas (a semi-divine race of half-human half-serpent beings, originally from Sanskrit language) who were the guardians of the rivers. We enjoy view from little lovely park and then afterwards start walking to the town center.

Wat Xieng Thong is one of the most important of Lao monasteries and remains a significant monument to the spirit of religion, royalty and traditional style of Luang Prabang. Since King Setthatirath built the temple in 1560, Wat Xieng Thong had used to be a significant place for Lao kings during coronations and becomes a gathering place for annual festivals and traditional activities to take place.

The Baci is a well-known traditional ritual and has its origins in the ancient customs of past generations. This ceremony is held for happy occasions like weddings, welcoming guests, Lao New Year, house warmings, home comings and other such occasion and has a deep meaning for Lao people, as well as for visitors to the country.

We will hold the Baci ceremony in the evening at a traditional rosewood house near royal palace. After a commentary from your guide, you will experience ritual. Afterwards, we can have dinner there, and experience a music and dance performance. Or we can also end the tour after the ceremony.
